A City That Slows You Down: My Time in Sheki To be honest, Sheki surprised me far more than I expected. At first glance, everything seems quite simple—old houses, cobblestone streets, and towering trees. But after spending some time wandering around, you realize that the city’s true beauty lies in that very simplicity. One of the places where I spent the most time was the courtyard of the Upper Caravanserai. The blooming trees, centuries-old stone walls, and the mountains surrounding the area created such a peaceful atmosphere that I simply didn’t want to leave. Seeing the traditional Shebeke craftsmanship up close was another unforgettable experience. I had admired its colorful stained glass and intricate wooden patterns in photographs for years, but witnessing the incredible precision and craftsmanship in person made me appreciate it on an entirely different level. What I loved most, however, was the city’s unhurried pace. The people, the streets, and even nature itself seem to move more slowly here. No one appears to be rushing anywhere. Before you know it, you find yourself putting your phone away and simply enjoying everything around you. Everywhere you look, there are blooming trees on one side, majestic plane trees still waiting for their leaves on the other, and mountains rising in the background. It feels as though winter and spring haven’t quite said goodbye to each other yet—they coexist in the same beautiful landscape. I came to Sheki expecting to discover its rich history. But what stayed with me most wasn’t the historical monuments—it was the feeling the city left behind. The peaceful atmosphere, the fresh air, the birds singing, and the quiet walks through its old streets became the memories I treasured most. Sometimes, a truly relaxing getaway doesn’t require a luxury hotel or a trip to a distant country. Sometimes, spending a couple of days in Sheki, doing nothing more than wandering its streets, is enough. I think that’s what makes this city so special—you don’t leave with just beautiful photos, but with a calmer mind and a lighter heart.
